Skip the Small Talk: 21 Questions to Ask on a New Friend Date
Meeting new women is one thing. Figuring out how to connect with new friends on a deeper level? That can feel a whole lot harder.
We hear it all the time from women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s: “I can meet people, but how do I turn those conversations into real friendships?”
Because you already know how to ask where someone is from, where she lives, and what she does for work. Those questions are easy. But if you want to know whether someone is truly your vibe—and create the kind of friendship that goes beyond liking each other’s Instagram Stories—you have to move past the small talk.
So, we asked women who are naturally great at creating meaningful connections. We also polled women who have maintained close friendships for years. We wanted to know: What questions actually help two people connect?
Here’s what they told us.
Make Your New Friend Date More Fun
You don’t need to sit across from each other and conduct a friendship interview. Please don’t do that.
Instead, turn these questions into a game:
1. Write each question on a small piece of paper or a sticky note.
2. Fold them up and toss them into a bowl, jar, or cute little bag.
3. Take turns choosing and answering questions.
Bring them to a coffee date, pull them out while grabbing wine, or take a few with you on a walk. Moving your body can help move the energy too—and make deeper conversations feel much more natural.
The goal isn’t to get through every question. It’s to follow the conversation wherever it gets interesting.

Questions About the Friendship You Both Want
20. What is your ideal friend date?
21. What kind of friendship are you looking for in this season of your life?
That last question might be the most important one on the list. One woman may be looking for a weekly walking buddy. Another may want spontaneous nights out, travel friends, fellow moms, ambitious business besties, or the kind of close friendship where nothing is off-limits. There’s no wrong answer—but knowing what you both want makes it easier to see whether your friendship styles fit.
How to Know if a New Friend Is Your Vibe
The point of asking deeper questions isn’t to force instant intimacy or decide whether someone passes a friendship test. It’s to create enough space for both of you to be real.
As you talk, notice:
Do you feel comfortable being yourself around her?
Does she seem genuinely curious about you too?
Can you laugh together?
Do you feel heard instead of judged?
Do your friendship expectations and values feel compatible?
Do you leave the date feeling energized, calm, or excited to see her again?
Not every new person will become your new best friend—and that’s okay. Sometimes the vibe is immediate. Sometimes connection grows slowly over several friend dates. And sometimes you realize you’re simply not the right match. The goal is not to force it. The goal is to give a potentially great friendship a real chance to develop.
